Farfelu Magazine
FAQ

1.) What is the deadline for submissions?

We consider submissions four times a year, and about a month before each magazine goes to print, we stop considering submissions for that issue and roll them over to the next---which means that we consider submissions all year, for one of the four issues.

Officially issue deadlines are as follows: Fall: August 1, Winter: November 1, Spring: February 1 Summer: May 1.

2.) Who retains the copyright?

The writer retains the copyright. We have one-time publishing rights in the magazine and on the website for that issue.

3.) Is there a word length maximum?

No, but because we publish relatively short issues, we prefer poems and fiction that run between 3 and 7 pages.

4.) Are there subject matter requirements?

We accept fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and scanned paintings and photographs (preferably ones that translate well into black & white). We subscribe to the "Keep Austin Weird" mantra, and indeed much of our subject matter tends toward the quirky and the ridiculous. However,
any issue will reveal a range of different subjects, both light and dark, as well as different angles and voices. The best way to answer this question is to read through back issues and get a sense of the magazine's tone.

5.) When will I know if my submission has been accepted?

We will send you an email (or letter, if you have sent the submission by mail) as soon as we know.

6.) Do we charge for submissions or offer payment to those chosen?

We do not charge for submissions. Currently we are not able to pay our contributors. However, we send each contributor 2 copies of the issue.

7.) Where can Farfelu Magazine be found?

BookPeople, BookWoman, 12th Street Books, and by subscription through the web site.

8) How do I learn about events hosted by Farelu?

By signing up to be on our mailing list, you will receive an email each time we herald a new issue, a reading, or a fete.
